News and Information
Idaho Fish and Game Department is recommending few changes to the 2002 and 2003 hunting seasons. One change is opening to areas in eastern Idaho previously closed to sage grouse hunting. All other seasons remain the same. Fish and Game Commission game bird season decisions will be in the June July newsletter.
The editor recommends checking out two magazines, The Pointing Dog Journal and Wing and Shot. Beginning with this issue the newsletter will suggest reading articles relating to gun dog training, health and maintenance and hunting. If you know of magazines on gun dogs and game bird hunting that have useful and helpful articles please contact the editor, Russ Heughins.
From the Pointing Dog Journal
March/April 2002
"Trainin・ Dogs with Rick Smith, Stimulation is Not About Pain." In this article emphasizes that stimulation is about touch, and it・s importance in developing a good gun dog. Rick Smith stresses, "Touch is a critical part of the development of both dogs and people." He further states, "Lack of touch restricts social development and creates all sorts of other problems -." Another of several points is "stimulation is touch applied to a dog in a specific manner in order to get an equally specific intended response." This is a good article for understanding what goes into developing a good gun dog.
"The Versatile Hunting Dog, by Chuck Johnson, Desire and Cooperation: The Balancing Act." This article explains the importance of desire and cooperation in a gun dog. Chuck Johnson begins the article by stating, "Desire and cooperation are two very important qualities that every good bird dog has to possess in order to produce game for the hunter." These are qualities not understood by all bird hunters who share their hunting with canine companions. Chuck goes on to share some very useful information on desire and cooperation. An excellent article.
"Hunting Nevada・s Super Chukar," by R.T. Dailey. An interesting article on hunting Himalayan snowcock in the Ruby Mountains of northeastern Nevada. The author finds this bird to be a challenge, especially physically.
