East Fork Salmon River Restoration Project
Restoration work Restoration work started Summer 1997 on approximately 10 miles of the East Fork of the Salmon River south of Challis to improve its stream banks. The work involves grazing management throughout the watershed, tree and shrub planting along the riparian corridor and river bank stabilization with natural rock and log structures. This project additionally includes irrigation diversions to develop stable instream structures that will deliver water for the irrigation system, stabilizing the river bed and banks and providing fish habitat. Portions of the river corridor will be protected with perpetual conservation easements.

The drainage supports runs of spring and summer chinook salmon and steelhead trout plus bull trout and cutthroat trout. The East Fork is one of the most important tributaries for salmon spawning and rearing in the upper Salmon River drainage. A trapping facility, constructed at approximately river mile 18 in 1984, collects steelhead as part of the Sawtooth Hatchery operation. Hatchery steelhead in this drainage are B-run fish originally from Dworshak National Fish Hatchery.

This specific section of the river was targeted because the river channel had become unstable. Severe river bank erosion caused loss of agricultural land. Spawning gravels were being lost. Tree and shrub replacement was limited because of grazing and frequent erosion from flooding. with target restoration completion date of 2002 for the entire 10 mile reach. Key elements of the work include instream structures, fencing, vegetation planting and cottonwoods to stabilize river banks and provide shading.

The following partner agencies are contributing personnel to develop the watershed plan, design the work plan, provide technical inspectors during the construction, and monitor and evaluate each field season.
